Nearly three decades after the original became a beloved cult classic, Practical Magic 2 finally brings audiences back to the enchanted world of the Owens women — and surprisingly, the magic still works.
Directed by Susanne Bier and starring returning icons Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, the sequel embraces the emotional heart, sisterhood, and gothic fantasy that made the 1998 original so unforgettable.
Set years after the events of the first film, the story follows Sally and Gillian Owens as a new generation of witches begins to uncover dangerous family secrets. The arrival of Sally’s daughter Kylie, played by Joey King, adds fresh energy to the story while expanding the mythology surrounding the Owens curse.
What makes Practical Magic 2 work best is its atmosphere. The film is drenched in candlelight, moonlit rituals, old-world mystery, and emotional vulnerability. It understands that the original was never just about witches — it was about grief, love, family trauma, and female connection. The sequel wisely leans into those themes instead of turning itself into a generic fantasy blockbuster.

The supporting cast also shines. Lee Pace brings charisma and mystery to the film, while Maisie Williams adds a darker emotional edge to the next generation storyline. Fans will especially love the return of the eccentric aunts, played once again by Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing.
Visually, however, the movie may divide audiences. Some early reactions praised the dreamy aesthetic and expanded magical world, while others criticized the heavy CGI and modern cinematic style, arguing that it lacks the warm, organic feel of the original film. Still, the sequel succeeds when it focuses less on spectacle and more on emotional storytelling.
