Princess Rosalinda María Montoya Fioré of the small kingdom of Costa Luna is preparing for her coronation when disaster strikes. During the rehearsal, General Magnus Kane of the neighboring country Costa Estrella leads an invasion, aiming to seize power. In the attack, Kane’s forces capture Rosalinda’s mother, the Queen, and threaten both the throne and Rosalinda’s safety. To protect her, agents of a secret organization called the Princess Protection Program (PPP) whisk her away to safety.
She is relocated to rural Louisiana under the alias “Rosie Gonzalez,” hiding out in the home of Major Joe Mason—an agent of PPP—and his daughter Carter. Joe’s job is to protect Rosalinda, but to keep her safe he must help her live as a normal American teenager. Carter, a tomboy who works at her father’s bait shop, is initially resentful and skeptical of “Rosie’s” arrival, seeing her as an intruder. Over time, the two girls learn to navigate each other’s worlds, with Carter teaching Rosie how to act as an average teen, and Rosie helping Carter gain confidence and dignity.
At school, Rosie’s charm, manners, and kindness quickly make her popular, which stirs tension between her and mean girls like Chelsea and Brooke. Meanwhile, back in Costa Luna, General Kane escalates his plans by announcing a forced marriage to Queen Sofía, hoping to lure Rosalinda out of hiding or coerce her return. Discovering the plan, Rosie briefly decides to go back, but Carter, knowing the danger, devises a ruse: she will pose as Rosie and let Kane believe he has the princess in his grasp.
On the night of the homecoming dance, Carter disguises herself as Rosie, with aid from Mr. Elegante, Rosie’s royal dress designer, who sends dresses and helps orchestrate the swap. Kane and his agents arrive expecting to capture the princess—mistaking Carter for Rosie—but PPP agents are already lying in wait. As chaos unfolds, Rosie reveals herself and asserts that Carter shouldn’t have to suffer for her. Together, Carter, Joe, and Rosie thwart Kane’s plot, rescuing the girls and capturing the dictator and his men.
In the aftermath, Donny (Carter’s crush) is revealed as less worthy than her loyal friend Ed, whom she accepts as her date to the dance. Rosie is crowned queen of Costa Luna in a ceremony attended by her loved ones: Carter, Joe, Ed, Queen Sofía, and Mr. Elegante. The film ends on a note of triumph, friendship, and self-confidence, as Carter and Rosie both grow through their unexpected journey together.
