The Haunting of Hill House centers on Hill House, a huge, old mansion with a long history of tragedy, death, and inexplicable occurrences. Dr. John Montague, a man who studies the paranormal, rents the house for a summer to investigate these phenomena. He invites several people who have had strange experiences with the supernatural: Eleanor “Nell” Vance, who is timid and emotionally wounded; Theodora, an artistic and more self-confident woman; and Luke Sanderson, heir to Hill House. They are joined by caretakers Mr. and Mrs. Dudley, who refuse to remain in the house at night due to fear, enhancing the feeling that Hill House is something to dread.
As the guests settle in, Hill House begins to reveal itself. At first the disturbances are subtle: odd sounds, creaking floorboards, cold drafts, writing on walls. But gradually more aggressive supernatural events occur—unseen touches, eerie visions, noises that defy explanation. Eleanor becomes particularly haunted, feeling a strange connection to the house. She perceives things others do not or misinterprets them, which deepens both her fear and her obsession.
In the Netflix series version, the Crain family moves into Hill House in 1992 to renovate it, with Hugh and Olivia Crain and their five children: Steven, Shirley, Theodora, Luke, and Nell. Strange occurrences begin almost immediately and escalate. Olivia works to design their future home, but Hill House disrupts family life with growing supernatural interference. Eventually tragedy forces the family to flee.
Decades later, the adult Crain siblings are estranged and carrying deep trauma. One death in the family brings them back together, forcing them to confront how their childhood in Hill House affected them. Each sibling now copes differently—some with denial, others with addiction or avoidance—yet all share psychological scars shaped by their time in the house. Hill House remains a presence in their lives, not just as a building but as something that reshapes memory and fear.
A major symbolic element in the adaptation is the “Red Room,” a locked chamber in Hill House that is concealed, mysterious, and changes its identity to different members of the family. The series reveals it’s not what it appears to be; it is the core of the house’s malevolent power, feeding on each person’s repressed emotions, fears, grief, and traumas. It disguises itself as many harmless rooms—playing rooms, family rooms, toy rooms—but in truth remains the same space underneath, absorbing what its inhabitants want, fear, or deny.
The final confrontation comes when the characters face the house both literally and metaphorically. Eleanor (or Nell) becomes convinced that the house is her home—that its power over her is almost irresistible. In the novel, many of the guests believe she is the focus of Hill House’s attention. In the TV series, the siblings must return to Hill House one more time, reconcile with their past, and decide whether to let the house define them or break free. The ending leaves much ambiguous: what is real, what was memory, and how much of the “haunting” lives inside the characters themselves.
