Season 3 returns to Monterey with many of the familiar faces—Madeline, Celeste, Jane, Renata, and Bonnie—likely reprising their roles. The new season is expected to be adapted from a sequel novel by Liane Moriarty, the author of the original Big Little Lies, which is due to be published in 2026.  One of the major changes will be a time jump: the children of these women are now teenagers, which sets up the story to explore how the mothers’ pasts continue to affect their children in fresh and more complicated ways.

The season is also likely to engage with the fallout from the dramatic events of Season 2, especially Bonnie’s confession to Perry’s death, which ended the previous season on a tense note. With Perry gone, there remain emotional and legal consequences for what happened—guilt, friendships tested, and perhaps new tensions among the group as secrets and loyalties are revisited.

Parenting teens adds another layer of tension: issues like identity, rebellion, mental health, and the way trauma transfers across generations are likely to be significant.  Each of the main women may be forced to confront what they taught—or didn’t teach—their children, and how their own unresolved issues (abuse, loss, betrayal) continue to ripple through their lives.

New conflicts may arise both internal and external: internal meaning within the core friendship circle (for example, jealousy, mistrust, emotional burnout), and external meaning public scrutiny, legal repercussions, or new characters who challenge their stability. Given how the show has always married personal, feminist, and social themes with suspense, it’s likely that the new season will continue that blend—strong emotional drama, moments of moral ambiguity, and a sense that even in a seemingly perfect place like Monterey, hidden storms always lurk.

At this point, HBO has officially confirmed that the show is moving forward, with Francesca Sloane signed to write the first episode and act as executive producer; original creator David E. Kelley is also involved. Lead actresses Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman are expected to lead the cast again.

In all, Big Little Lies Season 3 promises to explore what it means to grow older in the shadow of a traumatic past, how motherhood looks when your children are older, and whether the friendships that survived so much will hold when new pressures arrive. The stakes are emotional and personal, and while the central mystery (if there will be one) is not yet clear, the show’s strength will likely be in character, relationships, and what people do when secrets come back to light.
